Bollywood Night - April 2, 2015

Bollywood Night at The Couch was a great success! The place came alive with vibrant dancers, mouth-watering Indian food, catchy music, and a large crowd of international students.

In case you missed the Bollywood-themed trivia questions that took place later in the night, Bollywood is the name given to the popular film industry in India – much like Hollywood in the United States! Bollywood movies usually contain musical scenes with songs and dances. They are also often spoken in the Indian language known as Hindi. The films are a big part of Indian culture.

DJ Gagan from SoundSation Events had his music turned up high while everyone poured into the building. You could feel the excitement as everyone wondered what the night had in store. When the room was full our MC for the night, Su from Chai Junction, kicked off the event in style!

Dehli Rocks, an Indian restaurant in Melbourne that members of The Couch have visited before, catered dinner for the event. They served traditional, vegetarian foods like samosas and masala vada (Indian-style fritters) with various sauces. For dessert, everyone tried delicious gulab jamun (a sweet Indian treat boiled in sugar syrup), which could be washed down with warm chai tea.

After dinner, everyone watched a lively dance performance by PoisE’n Bollypop. The dynamic group is made up of Catherine, Miko, Veronica, Hope and Ana. The girls had a very short time to rehearse the dance – and it was amazing! Not to mention their great outfits, traditional make-up and excellent dance moves!

A dance performance by Jhoom Bollywood really got the audience going! Wearing traditional Indian attire, the girls performed a colourful routine and then ran a workshop to get the audience involved. The way they taught their workshop was incredible and very accessible to everyone present. The entire room got their hands, arms and legs moving, and the place truly came alive with Bollywood dancing!

A comedy skit by comedian Kuah Jenhan followed a quick round of Bollywood trivia. It was a perfect way to end the festivities and ensured everyone left Bollywood Night with a smile on their face.

Special thanks goes out to the City of Melbourne, The Couch, Chai Junction, DJ Gagan, Dehli Rocks, Mind Blowing Films, the volunteers and all in attendance for making the night a success!
