That night at The Couch was a special experience for me. I was invited to join the slipper decoration class organised by Hope, along with five other girls.
Due to all the earlier work put into preparing the class, Hope was so excited. She is always a bubbly girl, and she started the class by showing us pictures of beautiful slippers that had already been decorated. She then taught us about how to turn a plain pair of thongs (Australian word for flip-flops) into a gorgeous set. It was so amazing! We were so excited at that moment, and our fingers itched to design our own thongs as soon as possible.
We were then divided into three groups by Hope, with two girls per group. After that, Hope announced there was a competition among the groups, with a prize going to the best design! I worked with a girl I met that night named Erika, and together we decorated a pair of purple slippers. After everyone had finished, three volunteers from The Couch were asked to judge the best design.
To our happy surprise, Erika and I were declared the winners. Despite that, I thought all the other groups also did a really good job. We really enjoyed our chance to be designers.
But, not only a did Erika and I win a prize, at the end of the class Hope gave all the participants a mysterious Christmas gift. She was an excellent teacher, who made everybody enjoy the class and have a lot of fun there that night. Manaho, one of the other girls there, said, “We enjoyed the class a lot, even though we lost the competition. Thank you Hope!”
