Mid-Autumn Festival - September 24, 2015

Mid-Autumn Festival, one of the most celebrated traditional festivals in China, was celebrated at The Couch on September 24th. The night offered students and volunteers a great opportunity to learn about eastern culture and get connected with each other.

As is usual for The Couch, students from varied backgrounds and cultures attended the event. Thanks to the careful planning of the organisers, the night started with a joyful atmosphere as traditional Chinese music played in the background. Talented volunteers had decorated the room with beautiful crafts and colourful paper lanterns.

A series of cultural performances soon started, beginning with the touching story of Chang’e and Houyi performed by volunteers in traditional Chinese dress.

It was quickly followed by performances of popular Chinese and Vietnamese songs (Mid-Autumn festival is also celebrated in Vietnam).

Students were then given a real treat; a melodious performance of the PiPa (a traditional Chinese instrument).

After hearing the traditional music of the PiPa, everyone the enjoyed some more modern music with some Chinese rap music.

Finally, everyone had a chance to get involved with a group dancing session led by Hope and Veronica.

Throughout the night, everyone also enjoyed a feast of Mooncakes, Chinese tea and other snacks. The room was filled with food, laughter, lively conversation and music. The performances carried us all away to the mysterious eastern culture.
