When we reached 500 likes on Facebook, we knew we had to make a post to thank all our supporters. When I arrived at The Couch that day, several of the students there were playing with some newly donated goodies. I have no idea what these games were called, but they were quite similar to a tapestry. However, instead of threading you have to place little coloured pieces of plastic in the right place on the grid.
The Couch has been nominated for the CISA Most Active International Student Association Excellence Award. If you have Facebook, and want to support The Couch, please like this photo to vote for them!
My immediate thought was to make a simple '500' on one of these grids that Peter could hold up. But Robin, Jelly and Eve were having none of that! They soon had designs for 5 different plaques. One for The Couch logo (Eve), one for the Facebook ‘Like’ symbol (Jelly), and for '500' to be spread over 3 plaques, one for each digit (Robin). The hours went by, and even when there was a volunteer meeting, the three of them refused to stop working. In fact, they worked away until 9pm. Still not finished, they all took them away to finish at home; now that's dedication!
The next day, we could see 'The Couch' logo, the Facebook 'Like' icon, and the digit '5' plaques all looking brilliant. But, we were all a little perplexed by what we thought should be two '0's, but looked like very solid ovals instead. After looking a little closer, the middle of the two ellipse shapes had one of a 'T' or a 'Y' inside. A few people understood, but for the most part Robin would have to repeatedly, and exasperatedly, explain it stood for 'Thank You'. (You could tell Robin was responsible for the 500, when you consider the colours are the same as the Richmond Tigers!)
We had five plaques, so we needed five people to hold them. Our three plaque makers were obvious choices, as was Peter himself. Just one more remained. We asked Peter who should be the fifth plaque holder for our 500 Likes celebration photo. There was only one person Peter wanted, someone who been both a constant friend, and one of its biggest supporters, and who had been there since its inception, Gary Lee!
Of course, being the hard worker (and social butterfly) he is, Gary was in a conference, and had plans to have dinner afterwards with a friend. But, when he heard that Peter wanted him, and only him for the photo, he soon convinced his friend to let him do a quick visit to The Couch, showing his never ending commitment to being there when The Couch needs him.
500 likes, and 5 great pillars of The Couch! |
Check out our post to thank everyone for this milestone!
If you are wondering what happened to the plaques, they all still exist at the time of writing, but The Couch logo was sent back to Taiwan with Eve!
Maybe one day, she'll move the whole logo over one block at a time to centre it! |
