The volunteers at The Couch give up their time and energy to help others at The Couch, so we always try to give something back to them when we get the chance. One of those chances happened the day after A Night at the Circus, when Gary from The City of Melbourne suddenly announced he had some tickets available for the Melbourne International Flower and Garden Show, which was ending in just two days!
With so little time available to prepare, we quickly tried to find volunteers who not only had helped at both The Lord Mayor's Student Welcome and A Night at the Circus, but were also free to attend that Sunday. Very quickly we found volunteers interested in going and available, and arranged to meet on Sunday at 1pm.

Everyone on time? Preposterous! My monocle nearly fell out! |
In one of the most surprising happenings ever in the history of The Couch events, every single volunteer was not only on time, but actually early! Truly a once in a lifetime occurrence, and unlikely to ever happen again! It will be a day long remembered.

History in the making! |
After we entered the Royal Exhibition Building, we quickly made our way outside, to be confronted by a freakishly giant (and scary) Scotsman playing the bagpipes, accompanied by a lady in a giant dog suit barking away. As if her barking wasn't disturbing enough, the dog outfit was a boy dog outfit! We'll spare you the photo to prove it, but making the dog suit anatomically accurate did seem a trifle unnecessary.

Really unnecessary! |
It was hot out in the sun, but we all endured to see the beautiful flower and garden displays. At one of the first garden displays, your narrator noticed many bees among the flowers, and almost immediately set himself the task to photograph them.
|
Challenge accepted! |
This was to become a theme, with the other volunteers showing their extreme patience, never complaining even once about waiting while I was chasing after bees.
|
Not just one bee... |
|
But many bees! |
Towards the end of the show, we ventured back inside, where one of the volunteers (to remain nameless to protect the guilty) struggled, as usual, with the effort involved in going up a flight of stairs.
|
No, it wasn't Jelly - she climbed the stairs like a boss! |
|
It may have been one of them. |
However, we were all having so much fun that we stayed there until it closed and we were kicked out! When that time came, we took a short rest outside, then walked to Lygon Street for some pasta and some refreshing gelati. It was a really fun day, and shows why volunteering at The Couch can be so rewarding - not for the free tickets - but for the friendships you can make.

Interesting that the guys could look at the camera, but the girls were
all distracted by someone. |
A huge Thanks to Gary from The City of Melbourne for providing The Couch with these tickets!
